Master less than 80 metres near coastal

This domestic qualification lets you command a commercial vessel less than 80 metres long.

Master less than 80 metres Near Coastal (NC) is a domestic certificate of competency issued under Marine Order 505 (Certificates of competency national law) 2013.

What will this certificate allow me to do?

The Master less than 80 metres NC will allow you to act as master, chief mate or deck watchkeeper on commercial vessels up to 80 metres long operating within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for a Master less than 80 metres NC certificate you must be at least 16 years of age by the certificate issue date and hold either a Master less than 35 metres NC or Mate less than 80 metres NC certificate of competency.

You must also meet medical, sea service and course requirements. The requirements depend on whether you are getting a certificate for the first time or renewing an existing certificate.

Changes from 1 July

From 1 July 2018 all certificates of competency will be issued by AMSA. Information about the process for all certificates of competency, including new forms and how to apply, will be made available on 1 July 2018.

Endorsements

You may apply for the following endorsements to your certificate:

Endorsement to be master, chief mate or deck watchkeeper on a commercial vessel up to 100 metres long and up to 3000 GT within the exclusive economic zone

To be eligible for this endorsement, you must have 20 days sea service in charge of a navigational watch on domestic commercial vessels greater than or equal to 80 metres long.

Endorsement as master less than 500 GT STCW Reg II/3

To be eligible for this endorsement, you must hold:

  • a Master less than 80 metres NC diploma issued by a registered training organisation
  • a Certificate of Safety Training issued by AMSA
  • an advanced fire fighting certificate issued by a training organisation approved under Marine Order 70.

If you do not hold a Master less than 80 metres NC diploma, you must:

  • complete the Master less than 80 metres NC approved task book and a final assessment
  • meet the criteria for renewal of a Master less than 80 metres NC certificate of competency.

An endorsement lasts for the duration of the certificate it is attached to.
