Master less than 80 metres near coastal

This is a domestic qualification for operating in Australian waters.

This domestic qualification lets you command a commercial vessel less than 80 metres long.

Master less than 80 metres Near Coastal (NC) is a domestic certificate of competency issued under Marine Order 505 (Certificates of competency national law) 2013.

What will this certificate allow me to do?

The Master less than 80 metres near coastal will allow you to act as master, chief mate or deck watchkeeper on commercial vessels up to 80 metres long operating within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for a Master less than 80 metres near coastal certificate you must:

  • be at least 16 years old on the certificate issue date
  • hold either a Master less than 35 metres near coastal or Mate less than 80 metres near coastal certificate of competency
  • meet medical, eyesight, sea service and course requirements.

Endorsements and restrictions

You may apply for the following endorsements to your certificate:

  • master, chief mate or deck watchkeeper on a commercial vessel up to 100 metres long and less than 3000 gross tonnage within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)
  • Master less than 80 metres (Master less than 500 GT STCW Reg II/3) near coastal:
  1. command a commercial vessel up to 80 metres long in the EEZ
  2. chief mate or deck watchkeeper on a vessel up to 80 metres long in the EEZ.

Endorsement to command, or be chief mate or deck watchkeeper of, a domestic commercial vessel less than 100 metres long and less than 3000 gross tonnage in waters to the outer limits of the EEZ

If you hold any of the following certificates, we will give you a Master less than 80 metres near coastal certificate:

  • Master class 3
  • Skipper grade 1
  • Master class III (trading)
  • Master class III (fishing)

If your existing certificate has an endorsement or restriction, your Master less than 80 metres certificate of competency will have the same endorsement or restriction.
